What canoes should we use if my group has an odd number?
We suggest using a three-seat canoe if your group has an odd number. Our three-seat canoes have three "real" seats, and all three occupants can paddle. Or, the middle person can sit back and relax.
The B19 is our go-to three-seat canoe. It is 19'6" long and weighs only 49 pounds (for reference, two-seat aluminum canoes often weigh 70+ pounds). It is big enough for three grown men and a week's supply of gear. Our guides love this boat. It is a fun, sociable, efficient and stable canoe that makes for a great fishing platform and load hauler. We also recommend the B19 for families with small kids. It works well to sit two children next to each other in the middle seat.
For lighter paddlers and parents with a small child, the Northwind 18 with three seats is 18'9" and 44 pounds, and could be a good option for a slightly lighter canoe.
Another option for an odd number of people is to use a solo canoe. We typically discourage this option unless the person in the solo canoe is very experienced paddling a solo. It can be tricky and sometimes frustrating to maneuver a solo canoe in windy conditions, and the pace of the solo canoe may be significantly slower than the tandem canoes in the party.
Should I use a single-bladed or double-bladed paddle with a solo canoe?
We find this to be a personal preference issue. Our clients are 50-50 on their paddle type preference. Less experienced solo paddlers and experienced kayakers tend to prefer a double-bladed paddle. We include both options for your solo canoe rental.
